Raspberry Pi : license information and recommended specs

Hi,

I recently set up a wireless VR simRig in my basement and right now I use the my Android phone as a server for all my USB peripherals. It works really well but it's not super practical and I would like to set up a dedicated device as a server. A Raspberry Pi sounds like a perfect option.

I however have 2 questions :

  • If I purchase a new license for a Raspberry Pi, would my license still work after wipe/reinstall of the system ? What exactly ties it to the hardware ? I'm a bit nervous about that because I've heard of people losing their paid license after a factory reset or an update of their Android phone.
  • What hardware would you recommend to connect around 10 usb peripherals with VirtualHere CloudHub ? How much RAM is needed ? and would the newest models of the Pi improve my performance when using usb2 devices ?

  1. Sure you can keep using the pi with the same license. Its linked to the hardware so it wont change. (Android used to be like this, but google changed the rules and firmware reinstall will remove the serial now)
  2. Pi5 is very good because the USB ports are nicely optimized for a mix of low/full/high/super speed devices. Whereas previous pi versions used the VIA chip which didnt work as well for USB devices with mixed speeds. (Technically it had a single TT, whereas the pi5 has Multiple TT). However the pi5 wifi is not particularly good unfortunately.

I guess I might as well be future-proof and go for the raspberry 5. The only thing that I really don't like about it is the non standard 5v/5A power supply.

For the wifi I'm considering trying something like that :

With a Raspberry Pi 5 and wifi 7 or 6E chip, everything should work just as good as it does currently on My Android phone (connected on 6Ghz over Wifi 6E), right ?

Sure that will work great. You need to use RaspberryOS on your sdcard.

(Dont use the virtualhere cloudhub firmware for the pi5 because that wont have the driver for that card, whereas the raspberrypios will have that)
