Controller audio jack

I have a physical Steam Link device, and I'm looking to get sound through the headphone jack on a controller. I've tried multiple controllers, over USB and Bluetooth, and I have had no luck. I downloaded the free version of VirtualHere and it didn't help, but I dont know if that might be something solved with the paid version on Steam. Is that a supported used case of VirtualHere for Steam Link?

I have an Xbox One S controller, an Xbox One X controller, and a Dualshock 4 available to work with. (I could try a Dualsense if that would be a better solution; I dont technically have one that isn't meant for one of my PS5s, but the living room PS5 isn't usually used, so I could snag that one long enough to order another if it solves the problem at hand.)

Right now I'm having to use a Bluetooth headset, but that's far from ideal. It's usually paired with my tablet, so switching is a pain, and there's no battery indicator on the Steam Link to warn me if it's about to run out of power. Not to mention that a long gaming session would mean I can't follow it up with a movie or a long Twitch stream or the like on my tablet. Using the controller would be greatly preferable.

It should work via virtualhere on the steam link if you use the xbox wireless dongle instead of directly connected.

I don't actually have a dongle, they're ones that came with an Xbox. The One X controller audio works fine over USB directly without needing a dongle.
