Rename device without UI and without restarting server

Forgive me if this is a duplicate, but I wasn't able to find a direct answer to this while searching the forum.

Is there a way to rename a device without the UI and without needing to restart the server? Clearly the UI is doing it somehow, but right now if I want to edit the config.ini I have to then restart the server. This will be very inconvenient for my use case - for example, I wouldn't be able to rename a device while using any device (without interrupting the connection).

Is there an existing way to get this done, or would it be simple enough to add this functionality to the client API?
