Dear Michael,
I am getting some inconsistent results and I am having trouble pinpointing the cause. I do not know where to look for debug logs in fact.
Server is MacOS High Sierra and client is Windows 10.
Sharing a mass storage USB-drive seems to work fine apart from when I stop using the device, I cannot get it to show up on my Mac again. It requires a reboot.
I am also sharing a Yubikey like device. I can connect to in on the Windows 10 client, the key is recognised by its management app but I am unable to transfer data out of the key. As a test I am letting it 'paste' a static password (it is a HID device, mimics a keyboard AFAIK).
The curious thing is, is that is has worked briefly in my testing last night and again briefly today. Bit puzzled so I think I can really use your help :-)

update: I managed to piece a few things together. So there are 2 issues at play:
1) When sharing a device plugged into the Mac towards Windows 10, it does not return in mounted state on MacOS when you select 'Stop using the device'. A replug does not help. I can see still it in System information so MacOS is still seeing it attached.
At initial connection, MacOS does complain about having disconnected the USB storage device without ejecting it properly. Perhaps that is a contributing factor. Fixing this , requires a reboot. Selecting 'Use this device' will make it appear in Windows 10 again.
2) When sharing a HID-device, "keyboard strokes" do not make it to the Windows 10 client side. A Yubikey can simulate keyboard strokes as in typing out a password. Non-keyboard data works fine: the device can be managed so the issue is limited to the HID-part.

Dont use OSX as a server, use linux instead e.g like a pi4
That would be quite hard as
That would be quite hard as it is a notebook using a VPN-tunnel. Mobility is key here:-). I don't see the user lugging a Pi along let alone know how to use it.
Is the MacOS software no longer supported? I.E. no fixes to be expected?
.
No after 10.15 it wont be supported for virtualhere server on osx, apple is pulling support at this time. It might be available again at some point in the future but im leaning towards not supporting osx at all for anything, apple is just too unreliable.
